Course Overview

Mont Rose College of Management and Sciences offers this course with the approval of Pearson BTEC. The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the HND Health and Social Care sector. BTEC Higher Nationals offer a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding in the sector. Learners are attracted to these strong vocational programmes of study that meet individual progression needs either into employment or further study for a degree or professional course.

Awarding   Body  Pearson Edexcel
Level of Course HND is a Level 5 qualification (equivalent to the second year of a UK bachelor’s degree). There is an embedded level-4 exit qualification the HNC.
Number of Credit Hours Upon successful completion of the course the student will have completed at least 240 + credits. On completion of HNC the student will have completed at least 120 + credits
Study Mode Full-Time
BTEC Higher National Certificate (1 Year) The HNC is a level-4 qualification delivered over one year. The HNC is an embedded component of the HND, however, it can be taken as a stand- alone qualification. If a student opts to take the HNC the student would be eligible for a Higher National Certificate after successful completion of a minimum of 8 modules.
BTEC Higher National Diploma (2 Years) The HND is a level-5 qualification delivered over two years, the first year at level 4 and the second year at level-5. If a student opts to take the HND, the student would be eligible for a Higher National Diploma after successful completion of a minimum of 16 modules.
Attendance Full-time students are required to attend 21 hours per week in term time
Workload We recommend an average of 8-10 hours home study time per week for this programme
Exemptions No exemptions are allowed for this programme.

TEACHING & LEARNING

Teaching & Learning:

Learning and Teaching Strategies
Teaching takes place through practical and theoretical classes, lectures, seminars, workshops, data analysis sessions, discussions, tutorials, industry and community visits. You learn through these and through individual and small group self‐managed activity, including resource‐based learning and online learning support through the VLE.
Teaching is linked directly with professional practice and research, both of which directly inform and enhance course content and delivery. Visiting professionals contribute to the course delivery with full time staff and are vital to providing you with access to current professional practices and issues developing your employability skills and knowledge.We have a breadth of expertise within the team, all of whom complement their theory sessions with practical examples which are relevant to each of your individual needs on the course.
Seminars and tutorials make up a supportive network, which is complimented by the virtual learning centre. Whether at home or on campus, help is not far away.

Assessment:

Each module in your programme has a set of assessment criteria which you will need to demonstrate to pass the module. You will undertake one or more pieces of assessment (assessment items) for each module and you need to show in the work you present for assessment that the assessment criteria for the module are met.
Assessment items are designated as: practical, presentation, and coursework. The work you present for assessment is varied and could include:

  • Practical assessments
  • Data analysis
  • Case studies
  • Reflective activities where you look back over your experiences, analyse them with the assistance of relevant theory and reflective tools, and learn from the experience;
  • Online discussions that you have had with your peers, tutors and invited contributors to the programme;
  • Oral and written reports;
  • Journals, blogs and log books
  • Plans (e.g., action plans, plans for your group activities);
  • Presentations;
  • Portfolios of evidence

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry Requirements

Mont Rose College recruits students of good achievement from all educational backgrounds. Proven previous exam results are the main criteria for admission to Mont Rose College. International (Tier-4) students also need to show the English language competence in order to secure admissions. The following criteria must be met in order to secure admission to Mont Rose College.

  • A- level pass or equivalent
  • A BTEC level-3 qualifications in Health & Social Care or other level -3 child care ;or
  • Other related level-3 qualifications; or
  • An access to a higher education certificate awarded by an approved further education institution and
  • Relevant work experience (Minimum of 100 hours) or may be currently working as an assistant in a care home, hospital or other relevant posts within the Health and Social Care
  • A current enhanced DBS Certificate – should not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

English Language

International (Tier-4) students must show proof of English – language competence through success in an English test or background approved by UKBA. They should have CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference) B2 level and above in reading, writing, listening and speaking. European Union students should also have good exam results or background in the English language.

Restrictions on Learner Entry

The Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications are accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for learners aged 18 years and over.

PEARSON QUALIFICATIONS

Progression Route on completion

On successful completion of the HND course, students can gain entry to the final year of an undergraduate degree course at any University in the UK which accepts Pearson qualifications. They can also obtain admission into university for a three year level 6 qualification in professions related to health and social care including a qualification in social work. There is also an opportunity for progression in employment to take up a managerial or supervisory role within the sector.

Awarding Body Membership Fee

The Pearson fee for HND Membership is £205.20 to be paid by the college at the time of student enrolment. This fee is in addition to the tuition fee.
