Mont Rose College recently hosted an inspiring careers workshop, "Beyond the Syllabus: Turning Your Education into a Career," led by Asad Ullah, a Data Engineer at Profusion London. The session provided students with practical insights on how to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional success in the competitive fields of data engineering and data science. Students engaged enthusiastically, asking insightful questions about career pathways, industry expectations, and the skills that truly matter to employers.
Why Career Readiness Matters
In today's rapidly evolving job market, a qualification alone is no longer a guaranteed ticket to career success. Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who can demonstrate not just academic knowledge, but also practical skills, industry awareness, and the ability to apply learning in real-world contexts.
At Mont Rose College, we believe that education should extend beyond the classroom. That's why we regularly invite industry professionals to share their experiences and help our students understand what it really takes to build a successful career. Our recent workshop, "Beyond the Syllabus," was designed to do exactly that to show students how to turn their education into a meaningful and rewarding career.
Workshop Overview: From Classroom to Career
The workshop, held at Mont Rose College, brought together students from computing, business, and other programmes who are interested in pursuing careers in technology and data-driven industries. The session focused on bridging the gap between academic study and professional employment.
Key areas covered included:
- Understanding the current job market What employers are really looking for in 2025 and beyond
- Translating academic knowledge into workplace skills How to position your education as a professional asset
- Building a career in data engineering and data science Practical pathways, essential skills, and industry expectations
- The importance of continuous learning How to stay relevant in a fast-changing industry
- Networking and professional development Building connections that open doors
The session was highly interactive, with students encouraged to ask questions and share their own career aspirations. Many students took the opportunity to seek personalised advice on their career plans, demonstrating their genuine commitment to professional growth.
Meet the Speaker: Asad Ullah
The workshop was led by Asad Ullah, a Data Engineer at Profusion London, a leading data science and engineering consultancy that helps retailers, FMCGs, SMEs, and financial service companies grow their businesses through data science, data engineering, business intelligence, and multi-channel marketing.
Asad brings over eight years of experience in software engineering and data engineering to the table. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and an MSc in Data Science from London South Bank University (LSBU).
In his current role, Asad specialises in building scalable data platforms and developing robust ETL/ELT pipelines using Python, SQL, AWS, and Azure. Prior to his current position, he worked as a Research Assistant at London South Bank University, giving him a unique perspective on both the academic and professional sides of the data science field.
Asad is passionate about sharing practical industry insights to help students prepare for careers in data engineering and data science. His journey from MSc student to professional data engineer serves as an inspiring example of what is possible with the right combination of education, practical skills, and determination.

Student Engagement: Questions, Curiosity, and Career Ambition
One of the most striking aspects of the workshop was the level of student engagement. The session was not a passive lecture but a dynamic conversation between a seasoned professional and aspiring data professionals.
Students actively participated by:
Asking career-specific questions Many students sought advice on how to break into the data industry, what skills to prioritise, and how to stand out in job applications
Sharing their own experiences Students discussed their academic journeys and career aspirations, creating a collaborative learning environment
Seeking personalised guidance Several students took the opportunity to ask Asad for tailored advice on their individual career plans
Discussing industry trends The conversation explored emerging technologies, the impact of AI, and the future of data engineering
The questions from students revealed a sophisticated understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the data sector. They weren't just asking about job titles they were asking about the skills that would make them valuable, the certifications that matter, and the strategies for long-term career growth.

Key Takeaways for Students
Here are some of the key insights shared during the workshop:
- 1. Your Degree Is Just the Beginning
A qualification opens doors, but it's what you do with it that counts. Employers value practical experience, continuous learning, and the ability to apply knowledge to solve real problems.
2. Build a Portfolio of Practical Work
In data science and engineering, your portfolio often speaks louder than your CV. Personal projects, contributions to open-source, and internships demonstrate your skills in action.
3. Stay Curious and Keep Learning
The technology landscape changes rapidly. Professionals who succeed are those who embrace lifelong learning whether through certifications, online courses, or industry events.
4. Network Intentionally
Building professional relationships can open doors to opportunities you might not find through traditional job applications. Attend events, connect on LinkedIn, and don't be afraid to reach out to professionals in your field.
5. Understand the Business Context
Technical skills are essential, but the most valuable professionals understand how their work drives business outcomes. Learn to communicate the value of your work to non-technical stakeholders.
