On 5th June 2024, Mont Rose College celebrated World Environment Day Under the Set Theme for this year: “Our land. Our future. We are #Generation Restoration. This included a series of impactful initiatives to raise awareness and inspire positive change. This student-led initiative, spearheaded by Dr Sunanda Dola, lecturer in Business Marketing, brought together our students, staff, local businesses, and the broader community to advocate for a sustainable future.
A Day of Inspiration and Action
The day’s events commenced with an inspiring speech from our Guest of Honour, Mr. Cyril Bekoe, Manager Ilford Bid, emphasising our critical role in environmental stewardship. His words resonated with the audience, highlighting the urgency of addressing environmental challenges and the power of collective action. We had special guests, Mrs. Ruth Musgrave, Secretary, Transition Town Ilford and Ms. Carol Gorehan, coordinator of Forest Garden, who inspired us with their experiences working with nature.
Following the speeches, our staff, students, and guests engaged in a plantation activity. This hands-on effort symbolised our commitment to green practices and provided a tangible way for participants to contribute to environmental conservation. The activity fostered a sense of unity and purpose among all involved.
Growing Together with the Community
One of the day’s key highlights was the distribution of plants to local businesses in Gants Hill. This gesture beautified the area and fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility towards our environment. By involving local businesses, we aimed to extend the impact of our efforts beyond the college and into the wider community.
