On 20th May 2025, Mont Rose College proudly launched its first Digital Skills Workshop at Shakespeare House, Ilford. This exciting new initiative is part of the college’s broader commitment to enhancing digital literacy and providing students with the essential tools they need to succeed academically and professionally.
Held from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, the workshop was led by Matthew Lammin and marked the beginning of a promising series of practical training sessions across both Mont Rose College campuses. With a clear focus on accessibility and student engagement, the event aimed to introduce participants to key digital competencies in a welcoming, supportive environment.
The session began with a clear and concise overview of IT Fundamentals, helping students gain confidence with basic computing principles, system navigation, and essential terminology. Whether students were utterly new to IT or simply looking to refresh their knowledge, the content was delivered in a way that ensured everyone could follow and participate effectively.
The workshop moved on to Microsoft Word, where students learned how to format documents, use templates, manage styles, and navigate the layout options commonly used in academic and workplace documents. Practical demonstrations were combined with hands-on tasks to reinforce learning, allowing students to apply what they were taught immediately.
The session concluded with an introduction to Microsoft Excel, an area many students often find intimidating. However, through clear explanations and step-by-step guidance, participants could understand the basics of spreadsheets, including cell formatting, data entry, formulas, and functions. This part of the workshop demystified the software and helped students see how Excel could be applied to real-life scenarios such as budgeting, reporting, and academic research.
Importantly, this wasn’t just a lecture but an interactive experience. Students were actively involved through individual tasks and group-based activities, allowing them to learn by doing and to ask questions as they worked through each section. The practical structure of the session ensured that even those with limited prior experience left with a firmer grasp of digital tools.
The success of this workshop is a promising start to Mont Rose College’s ongoing digital skills programme. As digital proficiency becomes increasingly important across all industries and areas of study, initiatives like this demonstrate the college’s commitment to preparing students for a digital future.
With further workshops planned for both the Shakespeare House and Mont Rose House campuses, students can look forward to more opportunities to enhance their skills and build confidence in using technology. The first step has been taken, and many more are coming.
