Mont Rose College recently took part in an inspiring outreach day as part of the Primary Futures programme in collaboration with AccessHE and Havering Local Authority. On Tuesday, 4th June, college representatives Ivelina Ivanova and Vasilita Golban delivered three engaging Higher Education-focused sessions to Year 5 pupils across Drapers’ Pyrgo, Drapers’ Maylands and Towers Junior —reaching 190 students in a single day.
This initiative forms part of Mont Rose College’s ongoing work to promote early engagement with Higher Education and expand young learners’ awareness of their opportunities. The sessions were carefully planned to introduce primary-aged pupils to the concept of college and university in an interactive and age-friendly format, aiming to make future educational journeys exciting and achievable.

The presentation, titled “Your Journey to Higher Education: Exploring Exciting Possibilities!”, guided pupils through a fun and informative exploration of what life might look like after secondary school. From discovering different types of higher education institutions to learning about subject choices, daily student routines, and career options, the sessions were full of insights that brought the world of HE to life.
Notably, the sessions highlighted the many paths into Higher Education—A-Levels, apprenticeships, BTECs, and T-Levels—allowing pupils to understand that there is no single route to success. Emphasis was placed on making informed choices, finding the right fit for individual strengths, and keeping an open mind about the future.
Students also had the chance to participate in a myth-busting quiz, which helped challenge common misconceptions. The cost of university, academic expectations, and the pressure of deciding on a future career were all addressed in a supportive, approachable way. The interactive elements were exceptionally well received, with pupils demonstrating genuine curiosity and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions about higher education, student life, and beyond.

The atmosphere across all four sessions was energetic and welcoming. Pupils engaged with the presentation confidently, with many sharing personal aspirations and reflecting on what they might want to study one day. Staff at each school expressed appreciation for the relevance and impact of the sessions, noting how beneficial it was for their pupils to receive this type of guidance before transitioning into secondary education.
Mont Rose College continues to strengthen its role in the broader community by delivering this work directly within local schools. These early encounters are crucial in shaping how young people view their educational journey. Encouraging aspiration, broadening perspectives, and instilling confidence are all key components of the college’s commitment to widening participation.
Mont Rose College looks forward to continuing its collaboration with AccessHE and other local education partners. Through initiatives like Primary Futures, the college remains dedicated to empowering future generations and helping young learners see Higher Education as a possibility and a natural part of their future success.
