When you’re applying for accountancy jobs, it’s important to make sure your CV is the best it can be. You’ll likely be one of many candidates applying for the same role, so your accountancy CV really has to stand out in the pile. A great interview might get you the job, but it’s your CV that will get you that interview.
Start strong to apply your Accountancy CV
Your CV needs to start strong so that it doesn’t end up on the rejection pile after the first sentence. Make it clear and easy to scan for important points, and showcase your best talents first. If you’ve got years of accountancy experience, it’s probably going to be at the top of your accountancy CV, but if your last job was making coffee in Starbucks, you might want to start with your accountancy qualifications instead.
Keep everything relevant
Don’t just throw everything on your CV. It’s an easy mistake to make, particularly if you feel self-conscious about a lack of experience, but it’s better to keep your CV short and sweet than to pack it with unrelated waffle. Include your most recent work experience, but make sure you tie it into the accountancy role you’re applying for; think about transferable skills, such as time management or organisation, that you’ve used in your previous work and explain how this will set you up well for the new role.
Most candidates applying for accountancy roles will either have strong qualifications, experience, or both. What can really set you apart from other candidates is going out of your way to gain experience outside of these domains. Whether you’ve managed to bag some voluntary work experience at an accountancy firm or you’ve taken on the role of treasurer at your local gardening club, make sure you include relevant extracurricular activities – and if you haven’t got any, start looking.
Target the role
You should also redraft your CV and cover letter for each position you apply for to ensure that every sentence is targeted towards the specific role. It sounds like a lot of work, but it could be the extra half hour of your time which lands you your perfect job.
