Introduction:
On 16th August 2023, Mont Rose College actively participated in Ilford’s Green Action Day, a community-driven initiative to promote environmental awareness and foster a cleaner, greener urban environment. The college’s involvement primarily centred around supporting local businesses and community organisations in Ilford, focusing on the VHP Hindu Centre and Vine Court Church. Through collaborative efforts, volunteers from Mont Rose College and various other entities undertook gardening and litter-picking activities, contributing to the overall improvement of the local surroundings.
Participants:
Approximately seven dedicated volunteers from Mont Rose College were joined by participants from various organisations, including HSBC, Barclays Bank, Exchange Ilford, Redbridge CVS, and the London Borough of Redbridge, as well as enthusiastic community members. This collaborative effort underscored the significance of community engagement and corporate social responsibility in creating positive change within the local area.
Activities and Impact:
Gardening Support at VHP Hindu Centre: A team of volunteers dedicated their efforts to enhancing the VHP Hindu Centre’s outdoor space. Through their hard work, over 20 plants were planted, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment that contributes to the spiritual and cultural activities of the centre. This effort beautified the area and strengthened the college and community centre bond.
Litter-Picking at Vine Court Church: Another group of volunteers focused on Vine Court Church, engaging in litter-picking activities across key locations, including Havelock Street, Hainault Road, Rick Road, Holstock Road, and the High Road. This initiative significantly contributed to reducing litter and enhancing the cleanliness of these areas, making them more appealing for residents and visitors.
Outcome:
The combined efforts of all participants led to remarkable outcomes. Over 15 litter waste bags were collected, demonstrating a tangible reduction in litter within the designated areas.
A total of over 125,000 steps were collectively taken by volunteers, emphasising the physical effort and dedication invested in the activities.
Planting over 20 plants not only improved the aesthetics of the VHP Hindu Centre but also supported the area’s overall environmental health.
