Creative Cake Decorating Meets College Life: A Day at Mont Rose College
Recently, a group of enthusiastic Year 10 students from Chadwell Heath Academy visited Mont Rose College for a day of hands‑on creativity and exploration. The event blended two complementary experiences: a cake‑decorating workshop and a campus tour, offering pupils a taste of what life is like at the college.
Hands‑On Learning: Cake Decorating with Nozzles
The morning began with a lively workshop that blended the art of cake decorating with practical budgeting and financial management skills. Led by Mont Rose College teachers from Hospitality Department, participants learned professional piping techniques using a variety of nozzles, discovered cost‑effective ways to source materials, and designed cakes that reflected their personal flair. Over the course of a three‑ to four‑hour interactive session, they mastered the basics of lines, borders, rosettes and writing, while also reflecting on how to price and sell their creations.
The workshop was designed for beginners and enthusiasts interested in creative skills and practical financial know‑how. By the end, students not only decorated professional‑looking cakes but also gained confidence in managing costs and understanding pricing strategies. The buzz in the room was infectious as participants proudly piped rosettes and shared tips with classmates, proving that learning can be both fun and empowering.
A Taste of College Life: Touring Mont Rose House
After the workshop, the group took a short walk to Mont Rose House: the college’s main campus near Gants Hill. During the guided tour, pupils learned that the campus houses the principal’s and academic staff’s offices, plus a well‑stocked library, two computer labs, a large indoor and outdoor canteen, and a game room with table tennis, pool and gym equipment—all free to use. The virtual and physical tours allowed students to picture themselves studying in modern classrooms, working on assignments in the library and relaxing with friends in the canteen.
The visit wasn’t just about seeing the facilities; it was about experiencing college life firsthand. Staff and current students shared insights on courses, career pathways and student support services, making the college feel inviting and accessible.
