Public Speaking as an Employability Skill: Building Confidence for Future Careers
Mont Rose College recently welcomed students from the Health & Social Care department to an engaging and interactive workshop titled “Public Speaking as an Employability Skill.” The session was delivered by communication and public speaking trainer, Maheen Wasay, and focused on helping students develop confidence, communication skills, and professional presence—qualities that are essential for success in both higher education and the workplace.
The workshop formed part of Mont Rose College’s ongoing commitment to supporting student engagement, personal development, and employability. Through a series of practical activities and discussions, students explored how effective communication can positively influence interviews, presentations, placements, and future career opportunities.
Throughout the session, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and actively participate in exercises designed to improve their confidence when speaking in front of others. Topics covered included body language, tone of voice, eye contact, professional presence, and strategies for communicating clearly and effectively in professional environments.

For Health & Social Care students in particular, communication is a fundamental skill. Whether interacting with patients, service users, colleagues, or employers, the ability to communicate with confidence and professionalism plays a vital role in delivering effective care and building positive working relationships. The workshop highlighted how strong communication skills can contribute not only to career success but also to personal growth and self-confidence.
One of the key messages of the session was that confidence is not something people are simply born with, but it is a skill that can be developed through practice, preparation, and experience. Students were encouraged to embrace opportunities to speak up, participate in discussions, and challenge themselves in situations that require communication and leadership.
The interactive format of the workshop allowed students to learn from one another, share experiences, and reflect on their own strengths and areas for development. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, the session helped students recognise the value of their own voice and the importance of communicating their ideas effectively.
At Mont Rose College, enhancing students’ confidence, sense of belonging, and readiness for employment remains a key priority within the Student Engagement Strategy. Workshops such as this provide valuable opportunities for students to develop transferable skills that will support them throughout their academic journey and future careers.

The college would like to thank the facilitator for delivering an inspiring and practical session and extend its appreciation to all students who participated with enthusiasm and professionalism. Their engagement and willingness to challenge themselves contributed greatly to the success of the event.
Mont Rose College looks forward to continuing to provide opportunities that empower students, enhance employability, and support personal and professional development across all areas of study.
